Virgil Abloh for Louis Vuitton Mens?

Have you heard the news? After Louis Vuitton menswear designer Kim Jones stepped down earlier this year we were all left wondering who was going to step up and take his place. Well we have just found out that Vrigil Abloh, founder of OffWhite is the new man for the job. Am I surprised? Not really, after Louis Vuitton’s 2017 collaboration with Supreme you could tell the brand was trying to re-identify itself in the minds of millennial consumers. The Supreme x Louis Vuitton collab was introducing the idea of streetwear trickling up into high end designer fashion, which is exactly what Virgil Abloh’s OffWhite brand is all about. I think that this move makes sense as you see the influence of streetwear taking over the runways. (example Vetements, Gosha Rubchinksy, the newest Balenciaga collections) But with all this being said is Virgil (in my opinion) the best pick? Honestly, I would say no. Don’t get me wrong I have really enjoyed all of his womenswear collections, and I think what he is doing for the fashion industry is changing the game, but I don’t find him to be the strongest menswear designer. His latest fall 2018/19 menswear collection was pretty basic and didn’t show me anything new or very creative. I saw a lot of influence from Balengciaga and Raf Simmons, but almost so much so that I couldn’t really spot the difference. Sure, he can take an Air Jordan 1 and turn it into a $700.00 version that people will actually pay for, but does he have the talent to create his own unique silhouettes? Can he handle the pressure of designing for one of the largest names in fashion?

Overall, I’m interested to see how this new placement works out. I don’t doubt that Virgil is a talented designer, I have enjoyed his womenswear collections quite a lot, I’m just not so convinced on his menswear yet. With all that being said, whatever he is doing for OffWhite right now seems to be working so who is to say it won’t work for Louis Vuitton too? Let me know what you guys think in the comments!

Here is a link to his latest menswear collection, if you haven't seen it check it out!

History of the Maison Margiela Tabi Boots

Today we are going to be talking about one of my favourite brands being Margiela, and more specifically a product that has been forever on my designer wishlist, the Tabi boot. Now if you guys are unaware of this famous boot, fear not I will explain. At first glance they look like a regular black leather boot, but look closer and you see the unique split toe detail that resembles a hoofed foot. I remember the first time I saw a photo of these, and I was instantly taken back, and if we're being honest a little creeped out. But as I kept seeing them the intrigue grew, and I started to understand why these boots were an iconic Margiela staple. So lets take a peak into how these famous shoes became what they are today. The origin of this tabi design dates back to Japan in the 1400s. Originally they were split toe socks made to be worn with thong sandals, and were made when Japan began importing cotton from China. Marin Margiela first discovered this silhouette while on a trip ...

Swedish brand Eytys and their take on the platform sneaker trend

Hey guys, today’s blog post is going to be on a new brand I have discovered called Eytys . This Swedish based brand is collaborating with many of the top fashion influencers (for example Kailee Mckenzie ) so I figured they were worth checking out. One of their most popularized items I’ve seen is their  Angel shoe (which I am completely obsessed with). The shoe is a play on the platform dad sneaker trend that everyone has been loving this season, but if were being honest who can afford Balenciaga’s Triple S sneakers? Even though the Angel shoe is still at a high price point of $340.00 US, this seems a bit more attainable for those of us not wanting to dish out 900+ for a trend that probably won’t last much longer. Not only is the price more attractive, the versions of this shoe are much more subdued and could remain a classic in your shoe collection. They have 4 different variations of the shoe, one being a black leather pair, the second a tan suede, a...

Haute Humber Experience

Hey everyone, so today’s blog post is detailing the fashion show I got the chance to go to on Tuesday (the 10 th ) called Haute Humber! First of all, let me just say how proud I am of my school for organizing this event and incorporating so many different programs to make this happen. We had second year Fashion students in charge of organizing the whole event and I was blown away at the production! Such a cool night. JoesephTassoni So first up was Joeseph Tassoni with his entirely red collection. This falls in line with his authentic Canadian production method, with all pieces being made and sourced in Canada. This helps him put out the best quality products that will last a lifetime, and help support the Canadian economy. I love this idea because this means there is no offshore sourcing happening within this brand, and you have heard me mention the horror stories behind offshore sourcing before. I think that Joeseph Tassoni embodies Canadian design and is helping us all realize...
